Light Sculpture

YUVA travelled over to Gdansk (Poland) at the end of November 2009 to participate in the Narracje festival (26 Nov- 6 Dec 2009). Working with local Polish artist Dorota Walentynowicz, YUVa created a real-time light sculpture which was sound reactive to its surrounding environment.

Dorota explains a little more about the building, “The effect of projected light has caused the whole material of the façade to manifested itself in new ways. The façade consists of various surfaces, each of these reflecting the light differently. Its made of various materials, starting from metal and concrete, ending with glass windows behind which people who work here have hung curtains of various transparency. This building is a natural mosaic, which we use and underline in the work, trying to extract it from the dark”.

At 72m x 56m the CTO building was an ambitiously big surface to project onto. Two 30,000 lumen HD beamers were stacked, one on top of each other and positioned on a 3 story scaffold tower which was built on the top floor of a parking garage in order to achieve the image.

We designed custom Quartz Composer patches to run inside of VDMX which handled the sound analysis in real-time. Performing over 3 nights in November/December, we were worried about weather conditions but luck was on our side and it remained dry and snow free, only raining during the last half hour of the final performance.

Augmented Reality O.S Map

This demo application uses Augmented Reality to display a virtual map and access real-time data from a tracker marking printed on an Ordinance Survey map. The user is also able to access weather forecast data along with more typical graphical overlays.

This is a remix of the Twitterverse Quartz Composer demo, developed as a digital signage patch. Great for big screens!

Vusical Experiments

YUVa have just completed the first stage of a new project showcasing the ‘proof of concept’ of real-time 3D for live musical performace. Think of the days of silent films when the action on the screen dictated the mood of the music played in accompaniment. Vusic turns this concept on its head!

With Vusic, the music itself drives the visuals on a screen. We’ve chosen Debussy’s ‘Claire de Lune’, the third movement of his ‘Suite Bergamasque’ to demonstrate the concept. The atmospheric and dreamlike qualities of the piece are enhanced by visuals showing a magical underwater world.

Our quartz patch uses the recently released Kineme 3D plug-in as well as sound reactive GLSL shaders. Big thanks to Kineme for expanding their particle tools to include 3D meshes & boids so we could make our fish school properly.

Remix the advert

YUVA have been busy over the summer producing live motion graphics using Apple’s Quartz Composer. Here is a short video we produced as a demo composition showing how 3D meshes can be integrated into Quartz Composer to produce eye-catching digital signage. Our Patch uses a mixture of GLSL Shaders and ‘baked’ textures. Big thanks to Toneburst for his nice Quartz Composer implementation of Superformula Spreads we used for the sound driven background graphics.

This rendering was made using Kineme’s handy wee application called Quartz Crystal. Click here to watch the video.
